New York, NY

HOSTED BY PHIL KLINE

The 35th annual UNSILENT NIGHT in New York City!

Meet in Washington Square Park by the arch at 5:45pm

Composer Phil Kline created this 4-track walking sound sculpture in 1992, and has since led a massive chorus of boomboxes and speakers from the West Village to the East Village every single December. People gather at the arch in Washington Square Park, and less than an hour and mile later, end up in Tompkins Square Park. Each participant plays one of the 4 tracks on their sound device, together making a joyful din. “
The music bounces off cars and buildings, joined in an Ivesian ‘universe symphony’ by taxicab horns and cheers from passersby” (Ben Sisario, The New York Times).

Phil will hand out a limited number of vintage boomboxes from his collection, pre-loaded with cassettes. The public is strongly encouraged to bring their own boomboxes or sound-blasters (cell phone connected to a bluetooth speaker is recommended) and to pre-download or stream the track. Find out more about how to participate and download the tracks
