Transform the evening air into a shimmering, mobile soundscape. On Saturday, December 12, Dogbotic invites musicians, listeners, wanderers, and sonic tinkerers of all ages to gather at Sather Gate for the Berkeley edition of Phil Kline’s cult-classic holiday sound sculpture, Unsilent Night.
Part participatory ambient chorus, part sonic parade, Unsilent Night replaces the standard holiday stroll with a cascading wall of chimes, bells, voices, and synthesized harmonies. The audience is the orchestra: each participant brings a portable speaker, boombox, or smartphone playing one of four separate audio tracks. As we walk across the UC Berkeley campus together, the shifting acoustics of pathways, plazas, and architecture weave the independent tracks into a massive, drifting polyphonic piece.
Bring a Sound Maker: Dust off a vintage cassette boombox, charge up a portable Bluetooth speaker, or simply bring your smartphone.
Load the Music in Advance: Visit unsilentnight.com or download the free Unsilent Night app (iOS & Android). Choose one of the four audio tracks and have it downloaded locally so spotty cell reception won't interrupt the walk.
Bundle Up & Light Up: Wear warm layers and comfortable walking shoes. Lanterns, fairy lights, glow sticks, and boombox-mounted LEDs are strongly encouraged to help illuminate our path.
Hit Play Together: At 7:00 PM, we hit play together and start the procession.
